INTRODUCTION In an earlier article in this Journal entitled 'Negotiations for the Return of Nok Sculptures from France to Nigeria--An Unrighteous Conclusion' (1) I criticised the arrangement whereby Nigeria allowed France to keep for 25 years (renewable) three Nok objects that had been illegally exported from Nigeria and therefore remained the legal property of Nigeria. In that article I argued that the arrangement was tantamount to declaring an open season on the pillage and theft of Nigeria's art treasures. The successful outcome of negotiations for the return of a Makonde Mask stolen from the National Museum of Tanzania is in pleasing contrast to what happened in the Nigerian case. Yet there are some troubling aspects to the successful return of the mask.
